The Moose Lake Willow River track team was hosting the Polar League track meet this year on a cheerful, sunny day. The MLWR boys team took first place out of the 10 participating teams with 145 points and the girls team won second place with 99 points. For the boys, Esko was second, Two Harbors third, then Cook County, Barnum, Cromwell-Wright, Carlton-Wrenshall, McGregor, Silver Bay, and South Ridge. Esko girls were first, then MLWR, Two Harbors, Carlton-Wrenshall, Cromwell-Wright, Silver Bay, Cook County, McGregor, Barnum, and South Ridge.

The Moose Lake Willow River track and field team ran, jumped, hurdled and threw at the Section 7A South Sub-Section meet held at the Esko Sports Complex. Section 7A is divided into two sub-sections, north and south. To qualify for the Section 7A meet at University of Minnesota Duluth, the runners and field events must finish in the top seven in the sub-section finals to move on to the section finals. The top four relay teams advance, 16 runners.

Running, jumping, hurdling, throwing, discs, poles, batons and medals are all part of the events to qualify for the state track and field playoffs in St. Michael-Albertville on June 4-6. The top two winners in each category qualify to go on to state.

Eleven athletes, their alternates, their coaches, and their team all wearing white state tournament t-shirts, loaded up the school bus at Moose Lake for the send-off. The team bus was then escorted out of town, through Sturgeon Lake and Willow River on their way to the Minnesota State High School State Track and Field meet in St. Michael-Albertville. The streets were lined with fans holding good luck signs they had made and well-wishers beeping their vehicle horns and cheering them on.
