The tagline of MHA is that there can be no health without mental health.” For the past 60 years MHA has been involved in education, advocacy and services dedicated to breaking down barriers and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders. “It has been our honor to be able to provide services to individuals in our community, while educating thousands about taking charge of their mental health,” she said. They have been prominent players in a network of agencies that encompass numerous facets of mental health needs. For more than 20 years, the Innovations Awards have honored those others who have provided some of those services. The dinner held at Core Event Center in Irwin recognized some of the area's most influential people in the field of behavioral health. This year the Community Advocacy Award went to Jim Galik and Jean Slusser, a couple from Greensburg. “They have volunteered with many causes that impact people's mental health,” Levine said. “They are devoted advocates for the LGBTQ+ community and they've been involved with the Ray of Hope Suicide Awareness and Prevention Task Force, with the diversity coalition and so many more things. They not only devoted their life's work with working with people with serious mental illness, but they continue to do these things in their retirement.” Slusser was a psychiatric social worker at Torrance State Hospital and was the sole caregiver of her younger sister, Dorothy, who was born with Down syndrome and a number of physical disabilities. She has served on boards and partnered with organizations that focus on social justice, food insufficiency, mental health and recovery and a variety of other issues. “She works hard to make a positive difference in the community,” Levine said. Galik, a U.S. Army veteran, was also a social worker at Torrance State Hospital. His commitment to the LGBTQ+ community is deeply personal. His daughter is a member of that community and his brother died in the AIDS epidemic. He and Slusser helped to found PFLAG Greensburg and the Westmoreland LGBTQ Interfaith Network. “Their volunteering is the highest level of giving,” Levine said. “They do it because they believe in their hearts that it's the right thing to do. You always see them together and they are always volunteering together. They're a team. That's why we're giving them the award together.” Wesley Family Services received the Curtis Upsher Jr. Recovery Award for their mental health programs that focus on their “quality whole person care service” philosophy. “Their services are very unique and person-centered,” Levine said. “They have a creative arts program, a mobile medication team, supportive living, mobile psychiatric rehab, and very community based recovery oriented services.” Wesley Family Services has a staff of 800 who annually serve more than 20,000 individuals in 15 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. The award is named after the late Curtis Upsher Jr, a long-time community worker for various mental health organizations in the region. John Herrmann of Greensburg received the award for Individual Advocacy. “He has lived the experience with serious mental illness and has devoted his life to improving the quality of life for others with mental illness,” Levine said. “He talks openly about his own illness.” Among many other involvements, Herrmann is on the board of the Crisis Intervention Teams Steering Committee, volunteers with the Ray of Hope Suicide Awareness and Prevention Task Force, chairs the Ray of Hope Walk committee and assists in other events, and serves on a number of boards and councils. He is also the recipient of awards from other organizations. “John has turned his life around to make it a life of meaning,” Levine said. “He is amazing and he has come a long way in his own recovery.” The Education Award was given to Bobby Tanyer, one of four adult behavioral health program specialists at the Westmoreland County Behavioral Health and Development Services office. Some of his roles include serving as a mental health delegate and monitoring various county mental health and crisis programs including the crisis hotline, mobile crisis, the Crisis Response Center, and other front line interventions. He is involved with expanding county collaborations throughout western Pennsylvania and providing mental health education and support to law enforcement and other first responders. Tanner is also a team leader for LOSS, which responds with the coroner's office when there is a loss to suicide in Westmoreland County. “He is very devoted and goes above and beyond what he is required to do,” Levine said. The Workplace Award went to Venture Outdoors of Pittsburgh whose mission is to remove barriers and create access for people of all backgrounds and abilities to discover wellness and its benefits from engaging in outdoor experiences. They provide a variety of group excursions, boat rentals, fishing events and education programs that offer opportunities to enjoy the health and wellness benefits of the outdoors. “It's very unique in what they do,” Levine said. “There's lots of literature and science based evidence about being outside and being in nature that improves mental health. They have an app for their employees to use and they give them certain days off for mental health. They engage and participate in programs promoting mental health among their staff.” She also noted documentation that there's less absenteeism in a work place that promotes mental wellness for their employees. Four individuals and two organizations were honored Wednesday when Mental Health America of Southwestern PA presented its 2024 Innovations Awards.

Friday, May 24th, 2024 Derry artist paints ‘How I am seeing the world' 1 of 5 “Someone said grab the blue whatever over there, and I wondered what that meant,” he said. “And I remember being young and someone said that something was over there by that red thing and I said that's not red, that's green.” He eventually realized that he had color vision deficiency (CVD), more commonly called colorblind. Now 32, he discovered that this didn't have to keep him from being an artist. It was the late Bob Ross, famous for his “The Joy of Painting” TV series, that convinced him he could do it. “I saw a documentary about him on Netflix and then I pulled up some of his videos,” he said. “He said that he met someone at one of his events who said that he couldn't paint because he was colorblind, and Bob Ross told him that even a colorblind person can paint.” So Tatrai was inspired to give it a try. He initially painted in only black and white. Then last year when his brother asked him what he wanted for Christmas, Tatrai told him, “Give me some paint stuff.” Since then he has finished seven landscapes, one of them from a scene at Keystone State Park in Derry Township, and the others just scenes that he made up. But do the colors look “off”? No, probably because an artist who has a color deficiency will pick the paint to match the way he or she sees it. Humans see in color because there are three types of cone cells, or receptors, in the retina. One is mainly blue sensitive, another is red sensitive and the other is green sensitive. One of the most common is red-green colorblindness, known as protanopia. Tritanopia is blue-yellow colorblindness, and red-green-yellow colorblindness is deuteranopia. There additionally are variations in all three categories. According to medical and internet sources, about 8% of men and 0.5% of women are affected with CVD, which is usually passed on through the maternal genetics. Tatrai knows of other maternal relatives who are colorblind. Having CVD does not preclude being an artist. Clifton Pugh, a 20th-century expressionist painter and three-time winner of Australia's Archibald Prize, had protanopia. Charles Meryon, a 19th-century French artist, focused more on etching rather than painting after being diagnosed with red-green CVD. Jin Kim, also red-green colorblind, was an animator and character designer for Walt Disney Animation Studios. There has been lingering speculation about whether or not Vincent Van Gogh was colorblind, but his vivid colors more likely originated from his suspected mental illness and bouts of seizures. The color vision of Claude Monet, one of the pioneers of Impressionism, has been questioned, but the soft and often blurred colors in his paintings are likely the result of cataracts. And the color style of Edgar Degas was probably caused by congenital retinal problems. “People get confused about colorblindness,” Tatrai said. “Where most people might see several dozen shades of one color, I might see only a few shades of that color. Some people get mixed up completely, like red and green being confused.” Having CVD, he joked, makes him “the wrong person to ask” when his wife Ashley asks how their children, Alexander, 5, and Natalie, 2, look in their clothes. “If I dress them, they'll be in completely mismatched colors,” he said. Tatrai's late grandmother, Ann Ferguson, had taken art classes at Community College of Allegheny County. “I wanted to try painting, too, but it was something that I thought I would have trouble doing,” he said. Years later, the Bob Ross videos inspired him to try, and he watched them to learn techniques rather than painting along step by step. Theory is important when the artist has trouble distinguishing between colors, or mixing them. “I do the basics, like I know if you mix blue and yellow that you are going to get green, and I know to not make the sky purple,” he said. “But I have to make sure that I grab the right shade of paint and get blue and not purple.” His paintings are vibrant and the colors are correct. Trees are green or colorful with autumn, and the skies are blue. Distant rocky mountains are snow covered, and mist hangs realistically over lower elevations. “When Bob Ross said that anybody can paint, I didn't believe it myself,” Tatrai said. He hopes to take some lessons in the near future. Meanwhile, he has given some of the paintings to family members and he's considering entering one in the Derry Ag Fair this summer. “I find that painting is very therapeutic and it does help with stress and is a good way to relax, unwind and clear your head,” he said. “I hope that other people will be encouraged to paint the world as they see it, colorblind or not.” Post a comment as anonymous Report Watch this discussion.
