For many area students, going to college can seem unattainable. From navigating financial aid to making decisions about a future career path, the postsecondary process can be overwhelming.

He was visiting his great-grandfather's grave at the Old Greencastle Cemetery in Dayton a few years ago when he noticed a group of people mowing the grounds and trimming the gravesites.

It all began in 1987 when folks in our community were looking for a way to support loved ones suffering from serious and persistent mental Illness.

It was on her lunch hour in 1961 that Sharon Daugherty stopped at Donenfeld's, an elegant women's department store in downtown Dayton, to try on wedding dresses. She fell in love with a white ballgown with a sweetheart neckline. The price was $80.

We asked Meredith's daughter-in-law, Hannah, to tell us about her experience. Here's what she said: “I've loved vintage clothing since I was a high schooler using my lunch period to go shopping at the thrift store. It wasn't just about the styles of earlier eras, but imagining the stories of the people who wore them,” said Hannah Kasper. “Years later while visiting Dayton with my fiancé, I admired the black-and-white family photos hanging at his parents' house — especially the wedding portraits of my soon-to-be in-laws. Jimmie in his thick-framed glasses and Meredith with her bouffant and adorable smile — they had quintessential 1960s style and looked so young and in love,” she said. “It was a no-brainer to accept the offer of my mother-in-law's wedding dress. Not only was it elegant in its simplicity, but it held the story of a woman who I admired — for her professional tenacity, her dedication to community and charity, and for how she embraced her culture, and her children, so dearly. She was the type of woman I wanted to be. “I'm so grateful to be a part of this family's story,” she said.

The Breast Wishes Foundation grants gifts of $1,500 to support each man or woman “who wants to celebrate the courage in their journey.” The types of wishes granted range from vacations with a spouse to a family spa day, new furniture or mattresses. To date, the organization has granted 543 wishes.
