Each year, approximately one-third of people 65 years and older and one-half of those 80 years and older have at least one fall. Hip fractures are one of the most severe outcomes of falls, with a 31% mortality rate at 1 year. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published updated guidelines for prevention of falls in adults 65 years and older and those 50 to 64 years of age with a risk factor for falls such as diabetes, arthritis, dementia, Parkinson disease, a learning disability, or previous stroke.
