Residents who spoke to the Sun-Times Thursday say the changes in the neighborhood since Pope Leo's election have been mostly for the better.

“There was a five second, 10 second delay ... then it was ‘pop, pop, pop,'” a neighbor said. “Another delay, then ‘pop, pop.'”

Michael Barz, who rose to the rank of deputy chief but retired as a captain, says he was added to the list based on bogus information about his disciplinary record. His lawsuit names the city, police Supt. Larry Snelling and other officials.

The fire broke out around 1:50 a.m. in the 6200 block of South Paulina Street where roughly 180 Chicago Fire Department personnel responded, fire officials said.

Abdulhafedh Abdulhafedh, 25, was released on parole Jan. 8 after being convicted of robbery of a financial institution, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections website.

Since Prime Healthcare acquired Saint Mary of Nazareth and seven other area hospitals, several nurses at the Chicago hospital say conditions have deteriorated, prompting them to speak out and consider unionizing. An arson investigation is underway, police said Wednesday, a day after officers and firefighters responded to the 600 block of South Columbus Drive around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after reports of an “object” on fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The fire started in the 4500 block of South Ashland Avenue and also left 14 people displaced.

In Englewood, more than 900 people are without power after two days of severe weather. Suburban Bartlett, Northwest Indiana and downstate communities were hit by tornadoes Thursday.
