Deltona city leaders are moving quickly to establish a new fire assessment fee, bracing for a potential multimillion-dollar hit to the city’s budget if a statewide constitutional amendment passes in November.

– Parking at the beach in New Smyrna Beach could soon get a whole lot simpler. The city is looking to eliminate its own parking permits and start accepting Volusia County's beach parking passes — meaning residents and visitors may only need one pass instead of two.

– The Volusia County Council is set to vote on whether to create a domestic violence offender registry — a move that could make the county the first in Florida to establish such a database.

The project is designed to rebuild 5.5 miles of eroded coastline along the northern portion of Flagler's beaches — from northern Flagler Beach up to Varn Park — restoring sand and dune systems that were wiped out by major storms that also destroyed sections of A1A. The county has roughly two weeks to lock in a bid for the $35 million project, which is largely funded by state and FEMA grants.

– With the first day of school just two weeks away, some Deltona students may need to find a new way to get around. The city has banned anyone under 18 from riding e-bikes, motorized scooters and mopeds.
