Rose Park in Georgetown is almost always an active place, no matter what time of day or evening. The nearly two acres of public gardens and groomed lawns boast picnic tables spread throughout; tennis, paddle ball and basketball courts and a softball field; two children’s playgrounds, one for older kids and one for toddlers; a small recreation center with a renovated bathroom; and walkways and bikeways along Rock Creek Park on the east and 27 th Street on the west.

It’s been a long time since I left a theater with such happiness, filled with music and almost dancing to my car. It’s been a long time since the music of a live show was all so encompassing that it dominates your head with joyful sounds and lyrics for a week after the show.

The “October” meeting of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission for Georgetown, Burleith and Hillendale, held on Monday, Sept. 29, began at 6:30 p.m. and didn’t gavel down until about 1 a.m. Besides the many agenda items (see below), there was a surprise, high-jolt visual presentation about an ongoing issue: medical waste near Medstar Georgetown University Hospital.

A surprise meeting is being organized on Tuesday, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. about the allocation of funds to undertake some long-sought improvement projects at Book Hill Park, including the long sloping garden campus and front lawns of the historic library on R St. and Wisconsin Ave. The meeting, called suddenly by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation at the Geogetown Community Library 326 R.St.NW, is creating some excitement and buzz.

A sold-out fantastical and spirited opera, The Little Prince, is a premiere feature of the family-friendly holiday shows that are being performed during the holiday season at The Kennedy Center. Celebrating the innocence and imagination of childhood, the classic tale “Le Petit Prince” written in 1943 by exiled French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was composed as a tuneful opera by Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Porter. Porter is known for her lyrical, emotionally rich scores, and is teamed with librettist Nicholas Wright to adapt the beloved book—one of the most translated and best-selling books ever—for the operatic stage. The result is a tuneful, imaginative work that captures the novella’s dreamlike spirit while giving its characters vibrant musical life.

“We are very happy, delighted and grateful,” were some of the comments by the presidents of the Friends of Book Hill Park and the Georgetown Garden Club after an evening town hall meeting on December 9. The meeting was held with officials from the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation at the Georgetown Library to review final renovation plans for the park. These are notably unusually positive sentiments following meetings between city officials and community organizations.
