In “Badlands Rising,” the film shows us how mysteriously fate works and as an action thriller, it does a pretty good job. But the story feels too generic in some places, especially with the whole gang war and the angle where a retired military personnel fights the mob. At some point, some characters make it feel like they are playing Grand Theft Auto 5 in real life, killing cops, taking cop cars, and running away with a pile of cash. In the movie, retired serviceman Dave works at a construction company to provide for his wife Jen and their son Isaac. Dave is a diligent worker who tries his best to stay out of trouble but one day, his supervisor gives him some disappointing news. It turns out that the top brass of the construction company has found out that years ago, Dave assaulted a senior officer in the army and it ultimately led to him getting dishonorably discharged. Dave gets disappointed upon getting fired but understands that his supervisor's hands are tied; he calls Jen, who lives in their Duranville house to let her know that he will be home early. After what has happened to him, Dave wants to stay with his family, but unfortunately (or fortunately) it turns out that fate has some other plans for him.
