A state trooper spotted the car Friday night traveling north on Route 122 near McDowell. The car was occupied by two women, Stephanie Hall, 31, of Langley, who was the driver, and Briana Hunter, age and address unlisted. The officer thought they both appeared to be nervous, so he had them get out of the car for a weapons check, then obtained permission to search the car.

ABINGDON, Va. — A California man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, after pleading guilty to federal charges related to a fentanyl distribution conspiracy in southwestern Virginia. Roberto Contreras, 24, of Buena Park, California, previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and possessing a firearm in a drug trafficking crime. When police raided his home in March of last year, they seized more than 1,600 fentanyl pills, along with 7,000 Xanax pills, 3,000 Adderall pills, 242 grams of cocaine, more than $31,000 in cash and five guns. Deputies were called to a discount store at Fallsburg, where a man was said to be overdosing in the parking lot. While they were on their way, firefighters let them know that one of the men with him was trying to flee because of an outstanding warrant. The firefighters also spotted a woman in the group toss a black box under the vehicle they were in.

Katie Picklesimer, 38, of Tutor Key, has been employed as a clerk at the King's Daughters Medical Center clinic on US 23 in Prestonsburg. Part of her duties in that role was to accept payment for patient co-pays, many of which were paid with credit cards.

BELFRY, Ky. — A Belfry Elementary custodian who is known affectionately as the “BES Papaw” is a finalist for a statewide award honoring school support staff. Estil Hylton has been with the school for nine years, and his coworkers say he arrives before dawn, routinely stays late and often volunteers on the weekend to ensure the school runs smoothly.
