Last Friday, President Trump announced via Truth Social his plan to lower the tariff on 300,000 metric tons of ground beef imports in order to lower costs for consumers. However, this has generated a largely negative reaction from cattle producers, with industry leaders like Iowa Cattlemen's Association President Craig Moss saying the decision is “extremely disappointing” and creates “unnecessary market volatility.” During her media availability at the Iowa State Fair, United States Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said the reopening of a port in Arizona will allow beef cattle that were kept out of the country due to New World Screwworm to trickle back into the U.S.

The Trump administration has announced a new plan aimed at lowering beef prices in the grocery stores, but the plan- which will bring up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef into the U.S. over the next 90 days- will negatively impact the farm economy. Beef industry groups have called this a short-term solution that abandons long-term food security. John Newton, the vice president of public policy and economic analysis at the American Farm Bureau Federation, says the plan calls for importing a large volume of foreign beef.
A growing appetite for pork is building momentum with consumers. Dr. Glynn Tonsor, an economist at Kansas State University, said the pork industry is turning appetites into action by making pork a favorite every day. One of the key shifts has been looking more closely at individual pork products, such as ham and loin, and making demand a greater priority throughout the industry.
