If you were a young boy in Northeast Pennsylvania around the turn of the 20th century, you might very well have had a job at a coal mine; if you were a young girl, it was likely at a silk factory. It was brutally difficult manual labor for menial pay that families depended on to survive. NEPA played a big role in perpetuating this cultural quicksand, but it played just as big a role in eventually eradicating it. The horrific child-labor conditions in coal mines and textile mills directly catalyzed the public outrage and state-level laws that laid the groundwork for future federal protections.
