The police operation is still underway. Continue to avoid the area. The area, with treelined streets studded with duplexes and low-rise apartment buildings, had a friendly neighborhood ambience and lacked the anti-Jewish restrictions some of the wealthier enclaves maintained at the time. There are a number of Jewish schools and synagogues in the area, including the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue, the oldest congregation in the country, established in 1768 and which moved to the neighborhood in 1947. Greenspan, who led the Federal Reserve under presidents of both parties for 18 years, died Monday, according to a statement by his widow, veteran NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell. “Alan passed away at our home this morning at the age of 100 from complications of Parkinson's disease,” Mitchell said in a statement she shared with her employer. “He was a giant of a man who helped shape the U.S. economy for decades under presidents of both parties, but was always honest in acknowledging his mistakes.” The “mistakes” he acknowledged included first and foremost the housing bust in 2008, two years after he retired as Fed chairman. “Yes, I've found a flaw,” he confessed in congressional testimony that year when Rep.
