The city is a vibrant hotbed of refreshing music, with a massive, supportive culture that celebrates everything from daring jazz to infectious bounce. New Orleans has been on the bleeding edge of music and art for decades now, but unlike other cities that were once brimming with new ideas, New Orleans continues to innovate, and the great people behind Chickie Wah Wah are a part of the pack leading the city into a new era.

In previous editions of our Golden Age Thursday sample exploration, we have looked at soundtracks that inspired some of Hip-hop’s most memorable moments, proving that inspiration can strike from the oddest places. Movie soundtracks are designed to emphasize emotional highs and plot twists throughout feature films, and some of the greatest producers the genre has seen have taken this sentiment into their beats, employing the drama and romance of it all to detail personal stories.

Throughout this column, we’ve explored how some artists experienced a rejuvenation through the art of sampling, receiving a second chance for their art. Other times, an artist whose name continues to ring through the long hallways of music history becomes the inspiration for Hip-hop producers, two like-minded creatives tackling a melody with individuality. In these cases, the sampled musician isn’t getting a second breath, but being honored through reinterpretation, creating a symbiotic relationship between sonic worlds and genres.

The pressures that come with the release of a debut album are no mystery, but they seem to be rarely discussed. When fans and critics get their hands on an artist’s first outing, they needle through its weeds searching for promise, or a lack thereof, enhancing the pressures placed upon these young musicians just getting their careers underway. Not to mention, once a business entity like a record label gets involved, the pressure on the artist to craft a memorable single or make their art more “consumer-friendly” becomes another burden to bear. All the while, they are tirelessly pulling pieces of their spirit and setting them to melodies, attempting to condense a lifetime into a single tracklist. For all these reasons, a debut album carries the weight of the world for these young artists, but imagine being an established musician from a beloved act looking to find catharsis through solo material.

The “Welcome Back” banner unfurls and slaps against a breeze that smells of inclement weather, as our beloved, trusted employees of the Old Caustic Factory return from last week’s vacation. Their hard hats are placed neatly on their heads, and the machines are already firing off yet another exhilarating edition of New Music Friday. This week, we have rejuvenating jazz from a newly formed supergroup, triumphant returns from rock heroes of today and yesterday, and a freshly picked selection of singles plucked right from the manicured Caustic Garden. The Old Caustic Factory is newly oiled and teeming with excitement, as we enter another Summer weekend with some terrific releases.

The incomparable and undeniable guitar mastermind Jack White is currently fresh off the release of his first solo album since 2024. Arriving on July 10, Frozen Charlotte is a return to form of sorts for the long-standing blues-rock enthusiast, as White’s strained vocals navigate buzzing, distorted guitar riffs and explosive crescendos, bringing the artist back to his earlier years of bluesy garage rock. The mysterious White, whose releases tend to lean on the unconventional, is seemingly going the straightforward route with Frozen Charlotte, playing by the rulebook with plenty of notice before the LP was released, unlike 2024’s No Name, which spent some time as a surprise, physical-only release before making its way to streaming services. This year, though, White is sticking to the blueprint of the rock gods before him, including launching a tour in support of the freshly released Frozen Charlotte, which kicked off the same day the album was released at The Anthem in Washington, D.C.

After spending the past few years teasing his freshly released LP, The Fall Off, celebrating the tenth anniversary of his seminal 2014 LP 2014 Forest Hills Drive, narrowly avoiding one of the biggest battles Hip-hop has seen in years, and, all the while, releasing terrific projects like 2021’s The Off-Season and 2024’s Might Delete Later

Over the many editions of our These Walls column, we have focused on venues looking to innovate and reshape how fans interact with live music. These venues are continually seeking the slightest adjustments to turn their spaces into optimal, welcoming environments where performers can thrive and fans can be immersed. This time around, though, we have a special case of a concert hall sticking to tradition, a timeless space turned contemporary haven located just outside of San Antonio, Texas.
