We are looking at well below normal temperatures for this entire weekend, and we are also going to be seeing a redevelopment of cold air about a week from now. In the meantime, there is plenty of moisture still hanging around, especially over central and northern Indiana and up into Michigan through this week. We do see a slight break in the action, maybe putting together three to four days back-to-back to back that we might possibly use to get into the fields. That would be early next week. However, this pattern is highly unstable, and can change on a whim. Still, we are expecting plenty of moisture over the next 10 days. The map at right shows moisture through this coming weekend, and we will go through that in our narrative below.

Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. For the weekend, we look to stay cool with a continued damp setup for both days. Saturday, features clouds and limited sunshine. We’ll have to deal with another round of scattered showers trying to develop over northern parts of Indiana and southern Lower Michigan as we move through the Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and early Sunday time frame. In Indiana, we’re talking mostly SR 26 and north. In Michigan, its mainly from the tip of the thumb back to about the Benton Harbor area and southeast of that line. Rain totals likely come in at half an inch or less, but its more about the fact that we have another day of no serious drying. Farther north in Michigan and farther to the south in Indiana, we likely just see clouds and some sunshine. For Sunday, we do see another round of moisture trying to develop, this time farther south in the Ohio Valley, down into KY. Rains are not impressive at 30% coverage and under.25”. The rest of Michigan and Indiana should be precipitation free. The main story of the weekend, outside of moisture, will be cold air diving in behind the front for Sunday afternoon. This will set the stage for frosty conditions all over MI, with some hard freeze the farther north you go. In Indiana we can wake up to frost Monday morning in the northern half of the state, but you get south of I-70, and we end up with temperatures that are cool but not cold enough to be concerned about widespread frost.

The Saturday-Sunday timeframe puts together a general “light” precipitation outlook. Saturday showers and thunderstorms are going to be covering about 50 to 60% of Indiana, mostly 30% or less of southern Lower Michigan. For Sunday, we are largely dry both in Michigan and Indiana. However, we cannot necessarily rule out ALL moisture on Sunday. The best chance will likely set up in southern parts of Indiana while Michigan escapes with nothing, at least past mid-morning.

Over the weekend we do see a little bit of moisture trying to work through. A system that kicked off Friday night will be moving out to the east fairly quickly Saturday morning to midday. That system will end up giving most of Indiana.1”-.75” of an inch and the majority of MI the same. However, in far SE MI, thunderstorms will boost the totals significantly. A second wave is going to try and develop for early Sunday morning to midday. We can see another few hundreds to half an inch mostly over the northern half of IN. Farther north in Michigan, that second wave is mostly non-existent, with the exception being far southern tier counties, mostly along the US-12 corridor and southward. There we can see a few hundreds to a tenth or two as well Sunday morning to midday. The map at right shows precipitation over the region through midnight Sunday night.

This high will park on top of us through midweek next week, giving us a very warm, very dry setup over the entire states of Indiana and Michigan. We expect no precipitation, not even a threat. Evaporation rates will remain high, drying swift. This should be the window of opportunity to get the remainder of planting done, and look at things like haying or forage work all across the region.
