Anger and finger-pointing is ripping through the Democratic Party as officials figure out what to do next if Platner were to drop out of the Maine Senate race after a sexual assault allegation.

As of Tuesday morning, Platner remained undecided about whether to drop out of the race and wants to see a replacement nominee who shares his vision, according to a source.

The Platner campaign insisted it was not trying to unduly influence the party, saying it was simply trying “to understand what this process would look like” as he weighs his next steps.

Platner’s campaign and the state party have been publicly sparring, with the campaign denying it’s trying to unduly influence who would replace him as the Senate nominee.

His decision comes within days of a key deadline, allowing Maine's Democratic Party to select a new candidate to face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a critical contest for Senate control.

Campaign volunteers have literally been taping over old Graham Platner signs to quickly repurpose them for new candidates.

Senate Democrats have few openings to gain in blue or purple territory this year or in the next election. And if they lose Maine, even winning big in 2028 might not be enough for a majority.

Graham served in Congress for more than three decades, during which he evolved from a critic of President Donald Trump to one of his most zealous supporters.
