This was considered suspicious, especially since Fran was severely limited by her hip injury and so John had to file a missing person report with the authorities on October 4, 1991.While Fran was still missing, officials inquired about her associates and associates. John's responses to the question of his disappearance seemed uncertain, prompting authorities to request a polygraph test. However, the case was ultimately spurred to grind to a halt, with no concrete evidence or any information coming forth.The police were assisted by Fran's sister and mother in identifying John's ex-wife's disappearance. In 1996, officials tracked him down to California, where he resided with his third wife, Diane Beasley. The FBI responded with increased alert and interrogated Michael, who disclosed information about the box containing Janice's body. Later, Indiana police identified Janice's remains, which had been discovered earlier but not uncovered.John Smith is currently occupied.Diane Beasley, the wife of John David Smith, responded with anger to Diane's disassociation after the disclosure. John went on to murder Janice Hartman and then trespass on her home, resulting in his arrest by the police. However, he was ultimately sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 15 years after being convicted in July 2001. Despite becoming eligible for parole in 2011, his request was denied.During his sentence in 2019, John was charged with the murder of Fran Gladden-Smith. The murder case against him was dropped because there was not enough evidence to support the claim, and he chose not to confess to killing her. However, during the proceedings, he admitted to disposing of Fran's body but did not confess to her murder. At the age of 73, he is currently detained at the Marion Correctional Institution. He is expected to be granted parole in 2029.
