A coroner’s jury has issued 22 recommendations directed at Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General, also ruling that Kevin Mamakwa died by suicide in the Thunder Bay Jail in 2020. Jurors urged the ministry to develop and publicly release a plan to decommission the jail, and ensure it never be repurposed to incarcerate people. Earlier, Mamakwa's uncle, member of provincial parliament Sol Mamakwa, said the jail's a "death trap" that "needs to go."

The Geraldton District Hospital in northwestern Ontario has partnered with the Matawa Health Co-operative to introduce the facility’s first-ever Indigenous care co-ordinator (ICC). About 36 per cent of the hospital's patients identify as Indigenous, “making it essential that our services are responsive, culturally safe and reflective of the communities we support,” said chief nursing executive Kelsey Cleaveley.
