Regulator the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) will host the 2026 meetings of international organisation the International Engineering Alliance from June 7 to 12, in Cape Town, South Africa. The annual meetings, which include representatives from engineering, regulators, education authorities and professional bodies, hold discussions focused on quality assurance in engineering education and professional competence.

Venture capital firm Endeavor South Africa says five local companies show that innovation-led growth can be environment-agnostic for businesses with strong execution capability, scalable technology and clear market relevance, even in difficult economic conditions. The five firms are financial services firm GoTymeBank, digital payments company Onafriq, digital workplace platform Go1, cross-border remittance company Hello Paisa and insurance technology company Pineapple.

JSE-listed steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) has reiterated that it, the ArcelorMittal Group and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) continue to engage about a potential transaction, but have not finalised an agreement on the transaction. Accordingly, the anticipated timeline for a possible transaction has been delayed. The discussions remain subject to the conclusion of definitive agreements and receipt of various approvals, AMSA states.

South Africa's Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition has warned that the future of Tongaat Hulett remains a major threat to the sugar industry’s recovery, and that viable diversification options that facilitated inclusive growth and transformation are critical for the industry. “Flexibility within the sugar value chain is essential to ensure its long-term sustainability,” said committee chairperson Mzwandile Masina.

JSE-listed real estate investment trust Fairvest CEO Darren Wilder says the company is making consistent progress in repositioning itself as a retail-focused portfolio through the disposal of noncore assets and strategic acquisitions to enhance long-term earnings visibility and sustainability. For the six months to March 31, it declared a distribution per A share of 71.82c, up from 69.66c for the six-month period to March 31, 2025, and a distribution per B share of 25.94c, up from 23.10c per B share in the 2025 interim period.

In a survey of 11 749 workers across 14 markets and a range of industries, 72% of respondents, including white-collar frontline and managerial employees, said AI has already considerably changed skills expectations in their roles, says management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG). AI adoption by frontline employees increased to 74% now being regular users, which is up by more than 20 percentage points over the previous two years, the BCG 'AI at Work 2026' report shows.

Cyber-risk has surged to the top of the business agenda, with 40% of business leaders saying cyber is the top risk they are unprepared for, which is up from 23% in 2025, says accounting and business advisory firm BDO. Cyber-risk had jumped because organisations struggle to keep pace with the scale and speed of digital and AI-driven change, the BDO 'Global Risk Landscape 2026' report, which is based on a survey of 500 global C-suite executives in South Africa and globally, states.
