The New York Rangers' 2025-26 season didn't go the way that anyone expected, as they went from playoff hopefuls to finishing last in the entire Eastern Conference. The roster is overhauled, with the likes of Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck no longer on the team, while adding Pavel Dorofeyev, Sean Durzi, and Marcus Pettersson. The hope from general manager Chris Drury is that these new additions are enough to bring the Rangers back to the playoffs.

Back in January, the New York Rangers and general manager Chris Drury let it be known that they were going to retool, not rebuild, their roster. One of Drury's first moves was to trade away winger Artemi Panarin, who was set to hit free agency at the end of this past season. Since Panarin carried a full no-movement clause, it limited what kind of return the Rangers could receive. So, they sent him to the Los Angeles Kings, where he signed a two-year, $11 million per year contract, while receiving prospect Liam Greentree.

The New York Rangers are viewed as one of the model franchises in the NHL, even with their recent lackluster campaigns. They can usually sign the top free agents available to help their chances of competing for a Stanley Cup. But the Rangers usually do draft well to have some franchise cornerstones.
