Make no mistake about it. Errol Spence looked amazing his last time out. Facing Mario Barrios the Californian outworked his seemingly over his head opponent throughout the fight, bringing himself a very well earned unanimous decision win. It looked like the Ryan Garcia we thought we’d see regularly years ago back when he came across as sharp, explosive and very fun to watch. A lot transpired after those early days but Garcia really did himself a huge favor by dominating Barrios the way he did last February. From a fight fan’s perspective, it was very nice to see.

There are those of us who take the advice and guidance of others and then there are those of us who like to do things our own way. Count Jake Paul as a man who up until now at least is likely to do things his own way. Everyone and his brother or sister could have told Paul that fighting Anthony Joshua last year was not the wisest idea. Joshua is a towering Adonis like fighter with enormous power and several world titles on his resume. That alone makes him a tough out for any fighter, much less someone like Paul who wasn’t even a heavyweight and who had nowhere near the experience needed to face someone like Joshua and a ring.

The truth was that Garcia needed a major win quite badly that night. It wasn’t just the fact that Garcia won that was notable, it was the fact that he won in very impressive fashion. People had questions and rightly so after Garcia was popped for banned substances upon defeating Devin Haney in a stunning 2024 victory. A subsequent upset loss the following year to Rolando Romero made things go from bad to worse for the popular Garcia.
