According to sources, the government has short-listed over half a dozen names as a possible replacement for Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, whose extended term ends this month.

The Election Commission has set the ball rolling to fill 12 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha from nine states. The commission issued the notification for the election on August 14 and the last day for filing nomination is August 21. Polling for all the seats is scheduled for September 3. But Nitish wants the election to be held early next year, preferably along with the election for the Delhi state assembly, if possible.

Rohan Jaitley, President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), is among the frontrunners to succeed Shah.
