The vice-president’s new book criticises the hypocrisy of the old religious right

Conservative Christians in the US obsess about the sins of the bedroom while excusing those of the corporate boardroom. They preach “family values” but ignore how wage and health precarity prevent workers from forming families or spending time with them. They cherish virtue but neglect the economic underpinnings needed to cultivate virtuous souls. And when recent popes have highlighted these failings, the American right has lashed out, accusing the successors of Saint Peter of “socialism”.

Will a newly announced conservative antiwar “movement,” spearheaded by the likes of Tucker Carlson, Joe Kent, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Thomas Massie, coalesce into a successful third-party alternative to the GOP? It's not likely. That's mainly because the US system firmly enshrines the current party duopoly and because it's hard to see — for now — how the movement might serve a larger national political agenda beyond opposition to foreign interventionism.
