I have been writing a column in this paper for a good few years now and when I first started I resolved to steer clear of football related topics. Apart from a couple of lapses, I have managed to do just that.

It was a Saturday almost like no other. Almost, but not quite. I had gone through this twice before, once in 1965 and again in 1986.

Ian Swanson’s article in yesterday’s Evening News made for very interesting reading. Under the headline “What May 7 results could mean for Capital council elections 2027” Ian explored the options that may be available for those city political parties that will be vying for power in Edinburgh in May next year.

It was interesting to read in Saturday’s Evening News that the well-known pub on Elm Row “Joseph Pearce” was closing for a while as it undergoes a £280,000 upgrade.

Last week I wrote about the Meadows Festival and in particular the additional event which saw around seven hundred Kate Bush fans, all in red, recreating Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights music video.

Last week I was thinking back to “when I wore a younger man’s clothes” (courtesy of Billy Joel) and used to regularly frequent the pub known as “Pearce’s” on Elm Row.

One of the most talked about issues in Edinburgh politics just now is the proposed new north-south tramline.

My sister-in-law’s wee boy turned five last week. I first met him when he was a few months old as he arrived at Edinburgh airport with his mother and big sister on a flight from Poland. They were forced to flee Ukraine when Russian troops invaded their country in February 2022.

It was sad to hear that the former Sky News anchor, Dermot Murnaghan died last Saturday “following a period of illness with prostate cancer”, his family said.

I have written about the Five Sisters Zoo (FSZ) before, stressing that although it is called a zoo, it is more of an animal rescue centre.
