Earth Day is every day. This was brought home to me as I read “Reading Nature,” by John Seibert Farnsworth. (MSU Press, 2025) Its subtitle, “The Evolution of American Nature Writing,” gives the theme of this inspiring and informative survey, with each of its 10 chapters discussing, in chronological order, an important piece of nature writing.

The students in my U.S. History class, in MCC’s Dual Enrollment program at Lakeview High School, were surprised when they learned that, in the 1950s and early 1960s, over one thousand farm workers were bused from Mexico to Lakeview for the cucumber harvest. They came as the essential workforce needed for John Bale’s huge pickle processing plant, which sat on the lakeshore land now occupied by Byrne Electrical on Pickle Dock Drive.
