The students in my U.S. History class, in MCC’s Dual Enrollment program at Lakeview High School, were surprised when they learned that, in the 1950s and early 1960s, over one thousand farm workers were bused from Mexico to Lakeview for the cucumber harvest. They came as the essential workforce needed for John Bale’s huge pickle processing plant, which sat on the lakeshore land now occupied by Byrne Electrical on Pickle Dock Drive.
