Time was that many Montecitans were among those notorious for avoiding downtown during the first week of August, eschewing Fiesta altogether, which maybe happened once the celebration stopped having events in Montecito back in the 1980s. Now, Fiesta is making a foray directly back into the village, with a pre-festival event on Coast Village Road on July 30, as detailed in our cover story last issue.
It's no accident that dance is at the front of the new oversized magazine promoting the 2026-27 UCSB Arts & Lectures season. After all, among all of the luminous events spread across the arts, entertainment, and spoken word genres, dance has been the sparkling gem in the A&L crown that adorns one of the finest and most pervasive performing arts organizations affiliated with a public university; or anywhere, frankly.

Lights Up! Theatre Company is expanding its lighting grid and illuminating two new projects, all under the umbrella of what is known as one of Santa Barbara's teen theater conservatories. Pacifica Graduate Institute's Goddess-Makers 2026 event is a long weekend slated for August 28-30 at Pacifica's stunning center on Ladera Lane. With a theme of “Oracles of the Creative in an Age of Collapse,” the arts-based research conference confronts the current crisis-sparked sense that something foundational is giving way from a depth psychological perspective, positing that collapse is not simply catastrophe but a threshold, the dissolution of symbolic structures that no longer carry psychic life. The suggestion is that what appears as breakdown may in fact be initiation, which, in myth, unveils moments wherein the oracle appears. Collapse becomes the passage through which persona gives way to authentic authority.
