OLD BRIDGE – The president of the Old Bridge teachers union is among those who've called on the school board member charged with stealing more than $50,000 from a PTA and a youth sports program to resign.

SOUTH RIVER – Authorities were at the scene of an apparent home explosion that rocked a borough neighborhood Thursday evening.

An explosion killed one man and left another seriously injured at a central New Jersey home on Thursday. The cause is under investigation.

The explosion occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at a home on Continental Court, South River Mayor Peter Guindi said.

Sixty-two-year-old Kevin Gilbert, a retired Newark police officer, was killed in the blast.

The plan calls for the apartment building to be "substantially set back" from Route 1 and "significant landscape screening" will be required.

North Brunswick police have joined Edison, South Brunswick and New Jersey State Police in an effort to reduce traffic-related deaths.
