The wind will be picking up through Wednesday, and a Wind Advisory has been issued for the mountains. Gusts up to 50 mph are possible in the higher elevations. Gusts around 20-25 mph are expected around the Charlotte area.

Heading into the weekend we are tracking more active weather with scattered showers moving in starting Saturday with a possible brief period of mixing up in the mountains before changing to rain.

The cooler, wetter half of the weekend is Sunday, when low pressure pushes more moisture in from the west. Highs are back in the 50s, with the best chance of rain north of Charlotte and near the Interstate 40 corridor. This could start with some snow in the mountains early Sunday morning.

Above-normal temperatures will stretch into the weekend as the next strong storm system heads our way. Saturday could bring a few showers to the mountains late, but it's Sunday morning that we're most concerned about at this point. We've declared Sunday a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day with a line of heavy rain and storms expected to move in for the morning. Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat, but a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. Please keep checking in for updates over the next few days!

After midnight Saturday night, we could start to see the intense storms and wind moving into the mountains, then progressing east through the Charlotte metro from about 6-9 a.m. or so. Sunday is the day to stay weather aware, especially in the morning. The widespread rain and storms will move into the mountains and foothills first before sunrise. Then it all progresses east into the Charlotte metro through Richmond County from about 8 a.m. through lunchtime. All modes of severe weather are possible — damaging wind, large hail and tornadoes.
