“I haven’t seen that hard of a hit in a long time,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on the TV broadcast. “My chest hurts just from that whole sequence.”

“He would have been pissed today, absolutely,” Hamlin said. “But I would have said to him, ‘You’ll be around here longer, you’ll get me back.’”

From 1914 to 1956, the property was a municipal coal burning electrical generating station. From 1964 to 1973, it was Auto Ion Chemicals Inc., treating chromium plating and electroplating waste at the site.

The state of Michigan is giving $5 million toward the project, formerly dubbed "Project Blue Light."
