I have talked about the Black Canyon Trail over a dozen times since 2017. It has captured my attention for several reasons. It is one of the few significant trails in Arizona; significant for its length, its historic use and that it is incomplete. Call me impatient, a nonconformist or even unorthodox, yet I get the job done. When I discovered that there are two trails named Black Canyon near each other, the obvious thing to do would be to connect those trails. Therefore, I have completed the Black Canyon Trail (unofficial version) between Carefree Highway west of Anthem and Highway 260 near Cottonwood, twice.

My favorite segment of the Black Canyon Trail is the one beginning at the Rock Springs Trailhead. However, on my latest hike there, I spent relatively little time on the actual trail.

Jimmy and Mary invited a few people to hike down Havasu Canyon in the Grand Canyon but were unable to coordinate the trip due to a variety of issues with schedules, permits, etc. I suggested an alternative location, but they declined saying they were only interested in hiking Havasu Canyon. I was perplexed with this very narrow point of view and asked why. Jimmy said it was different every time, so it was not like they were simply rewinding one hike based on a previous trip. While I have repeatedly hiked many trails, I do not think I have ever returned to a trail that I had hiked the previous week, until now. To Jimmy's point, these two hikes were quite distinctive due primarily, to who was on the trail each time.
