Fresh from a win in the Grand Annual Steeplechase, Warrnambool trainer Aaron Purcell is hoping to add another country racing feature to his record at Swan Hill on Friday. Purcell won last month’s Grand Annual with veteran jumper Instigator and he saddles up Dashing in the $150,000 Golden Topaz over 1200 metres on Friday.

Lightly raced Warrnambool galloper Aggressive heads to Darwin this week with the Northern Territory Derby on the radar. Aggressive was unplaced behind stablemate Squander in a benchmark race over 2000 metres at Casterton on Sunday but the run pleased trainer Aaron Purcell. “The pace was really on and I don’t think it really suited his racing style,” Purcell said.

Trainer Symon Wilde praised the ride of Dean Parker after Bazini’s win in last Sunday’s $50,000 Pontings Mitre 10 Open Steeplechase (3450m) at Warrnambool. Bazini ($2.70) came home strongly to defeat $1.80 favourite The Mighty Spar in what was a three-horse race. Not Usual Dream looked like being right in the finish but came down at the second-last fence.
