The Saraland Spartans demonstrated their comeback abilities Tuesday en route to winning the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 6A state softball tournament in Oxford.

Lloyd Skoda knows baseball. He spent 39 years as a head coach — 10 at Daphne and 29 at Faith Academy in two stints sandwiched around his time at Daphne. He won 902 games and a handful of state championships. So when he talks about baseball, one should pay attention.

Two Baldwin County players collected senior championships Sunday at the Country Club of Mobile. Haymes Snedker of Point Clear produced a two-shot victory in the 29th annual Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship, while Fairhope's Robert Nelson walked away with a 12-shot win in the eighth annual Alabama State Super Senior Amateur Championship.

When the film “Saving Private Ryan” was released in July of 1998, it drew immediate attention for its opening 10-minute sequence depicting the D-Day fighting on Omaha Beach in Normandy. Director Steven Spielberg brought the realities of war, of combat, to a new level of understanding for those fortunate enough not to have experienced it firsthand.

Rodney Jordan, who has served as Satsuma's football head coach the past four seasons, has been relieved of those duties. He was informed of the school's decision on the final day of teacher work days for the past school year.

A large crowd of well-wishers attended a retirement reception for South Alabama Athletics Director Dr. Joel Erdmann Wednesday at the Hargrove Club of Hancock Whitney Stadium. University President Jo Bonner, Executive Vice-President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent, Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill, USA Board of Trustees member Jimmy Shumock and interim athletics director Dr. Daniel McCarthy shared stories and offered praise to Erdmann, who served as the school's athletics director for 17 years. His final official day on the job will be Sunday, May 31.

Brandon Garrett, who recently left St. Paul's after seven seasons at the school, has been named the new boys' basketball head coach at Faith Academy. He takes over for Luke Touliatos who held the position the past two seasons.
