A utility crew struck a water main on May River Rd. in front of the Old Town Bluffton Inn. A geyser of water excavated a deep hole in front of the inn.

Sterling Helicopter, a Pennsylvania-based helicopter maintenance and aerospace engineering firm, is opening an office in Bluffton in the fall of 2026. The firm expects to hire for more than a dozen positions over five years.

A quirky character rolled into Beaufort in the ‘50s, and earned a reputation as lovable but mysterious eccentric. Known only as Driftwood, he carved faces into trees around town. The last surviving example was cut down July 28, but efforts are underway to preserve the carving and Driftwood's legacy.
