Article content “I am writing to remind you of the University of Toronto's commitment to free expression and lawful and peaceful protest, as well as the necessary limits that accompany those freedoms,” Welsh's email says. The email comes amidst a dramatic surge in protests on American university campuses that, along with often aggressive police responses, have caught international attention and led to political condemnation as high up as the United States' Congress. Advertisement 2 Article content At McGill University in Montreal, a protest encampment has taken over a portion of the campus. The university maintains that the encampments are a violation not just of McGill policy but of the law. The protest on McGill began Saturday afternoon, but has since swelled as other protesters joined. There are now tents scattered around, and the university says the number of tents has tripled. “We have become aware that many of them, if not the majority, are not members of the McGill community,” the school said. In a Monday email, McGill said it had seen video evidence of “some people using unequivocally antisemitic language and intimidating behaviour, which is absolutely unacceptable on our campuses. “We condemn this in the strongest possible terms and will act quickly to investigate.” Advertisement 3 Article content So far, no encampment has sprung up a the University of Toronto. The university's statement on freedom of speech says specifically that students are allowed to “engage in peaceful assemblies and demonstrations.” However, Welsh's email suggests anti-Israel protests in the form of tent encampments do not fall under the ambit of protections afforded by university policy. “Any student involved in unauthorized activities or conduct that contravenes University policies or the law may be subject to consequences,” the email says. It does not specify what those consequences might be. The Israeli embassy in Cairo is in contact with the Egyptian authorities, who are investigating the circumstances of the case,” Egypt's ministry of the interior said, according to Al Arabiya. The Israeli foreign ministry did not name the victim, but confirmed to the BBC that he was a businessman with dual Canadian-Israeli citizenship. Kipper was the CEO of O.K. Group, which, according to his LinkedIn page , has offices in Ukraine, Egypt and Israel. That page also says that Kipper was educated at Toronto's Seneca College, graduating in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in international business. Egypt's interior ministry said Kipper was the victim of a “criminal shooting in Alexandria,” according to i24News, an Israeli television station. But unverified reports have attributed the killing to nationalist or jihadist groups. The Vanguards of Liberation — Martyr Mohammed Salah Groups, a previously unknown group whose name is in reference to an Egyptian policeman who killed three Israel Defense Forces soldiers in June 2023, claimed responsibility. The killing was “a step on the path of the Egyptian people's struggle against the Zionist enemy,” the group's statement said. However, a security source told Reuters that Egyptian security had no knowledge of the group or whether it had been involved in the attack. Oksana Kipper, the victim's wife, told Israel's KAN network that she believed her husband had been killed for nationalistic reasons. He was not robbed, KAN reported, although Reuters reported a security source said he was killed “with the motive of robbery.” Oksana said her husband would be brought back to Israel for burial. The Times of Israel, citing the Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, reported that a suspect in Kipper's killing had been arrested, but was not identified. He once called Bob Dylan , in a segment defending Dylan's receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the “God-king of the boomers,” while simultaneously noting that the “guileful magician Leonard Cohen” was perhaps a better writer. “Whenever he would speak and write, as sharp and witty as he was, you could always tell it came from a place of genuine love for Canada and its people. This nation is poorer without him,” said Kevin Libin, Postmedia's executive editor, politics, and a longtime editor of Murphy's. Murphy did not just write on matters of politics and culture. Forced to cook during the pandemic, he wrote of finding himself “Kraft Dinner intolerant” after eating it one too many times. He memorably took Tim Hortons to task for selling lattes and cappuccinos, a trend, he warned that “will, over time, inevitably lead to selling and playing Michael Bublé croonings, or offering little animated tofu statuettes of Celine Dion yodelling about the Titanic going down.” Advertisement 8 Article content Murphy's ire was not driven by partisanship; he ran as a provincial Liberal candidate in Newfoundland and Labrador and worked for the provincial conservatives. Rather, wrote Carson Jerema , Murphy's last editor at the National Post, he was “driven by being a man who no longer recognized his country.” In his columns, Murphy inveighed against green activism — Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was a semi-regular target — and the politics of the modern left. Both earned him considerable enmity, and, at times, considerable controversy, though Murphy understood that no opinion writer is doing their job if everyone likes them. That's because he was a fiercely proud Canadian who believed every part of Canada should be treated fairly because every part of Canada makes our nation stronger,” Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe wrote on X. Ontario Premier Doug Ford recalled the kind words Murphy had for his brother, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, when he died. “The common man lost a buddy yesterday,” Murphy said on CBC at the time . “Mr. Ford was one of the most remarkable ordinary people Toronto ever produced.” “Throughout his life and career, he never lost touch with everyday people. He was their voice and champion,” Premier Doug Ford wrote on X. It was with regards to the conservative movement that, at least in the past decade, Murphy's words arguably had their greatest influence, although the occasional Liberal popped up to praise him.
