Live People at a Cumberland Valley School Board meeting cheer for special meeting. (WHP) CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — The vote to bring him back passed 5-4. More than 100 people were at the meeting to provide public comment, for and against the assembly. The special meeting went for more than five hours. It was originally canceled at an April 15 meeting where some board members expressed concerns about Pancholy's lifestyle choices, and claimed that he was a political activist. The assembly will now take place on May 22. However, board members said parents who want to keep their kids home on that could do so and have alternative lessons. The meeting started with board members apologizing for comments made during the April 15th meeting. "I value human life equally and that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity. My words were not meant to disrespect the value of any individual," said Kelly Potteiger, a member of the school board. Some board members accused Pancholy of being a political activist, during the meeting one member pointed to a "Racism is a Virus" packet they said is on Pancholy's website. Where they said there were parts of the packets that focused on organizing protests. Board members were accused of canceling the event because the "30 Rock" star was openly gay. Pointing to comments about Pancholy's "lifestyle" during the April 15 event. Many spoke about that during the public comment section. “And I felt that shame. My complacent, naïve bubble popped and so I am here, speaking up, fighting for what I know is right,” said one member of the community. CBS 21 has reached out to Pancholy to see if he would still be willing to speak at the school, but has not heard back. HOW DID WE GET HERE The question the anti-bullying assembly was first brought up during the April 15th Cumberland Valley School Board meeting. The invitation was rescinded in a unanimous vote, after board members said they wanted to distance the district from all political events. At the time Bud Shaffner, the board member who brought up the resolution to allow Pancholy to come back, said board has tried to prevent politics from entering district schools since a 2016 controversy where then presidential Republican nominee, Donald Trump, was approved to host a rally at Cumberland Valley High School. "Due to the backlash we received, we did form a policy that no political speaking could be done in our schools," Shaffner said. The district released a statement following that meeting: Each year, our principal at Mountain View Middle School works together with staff members to identify award-winning young adult authors to visit with students. In the past, authors have given a presentation as part of a unique educational experience for students. The visit was not on the board's original April 15, 2024, agenda. However, during the portion of the meeting in which board members may bring up additional items for consideration, one board member motioned to rescind the invitation to this year's scheduled visit by author Maulik Pancholy to Mountain View. Ultimately, the board voted not to allow the visit. The decision to cancel the assembly was blasted by the Cumberland Valley Superintendent Dr. Mark Blanchard, along with other members of the district administration. He sent a letter to staff and faculty at the district calling the board's decision a "disappointment." During Wednesday's board meeting, Dr. Blanchard answered a question from one of the board members and said his job was not threatened after sending that letter.
