Marshall swimming and diving coach Ian Walsh has resigned from his position, announced by Thundering Herd athletic Director Gerald Harrison on Monday."What an honor and privilege it has been to lead this program and be part of this amazing community," Walsh said via release. "Our family has created so many wonderful memories we will carry for the rest of our lives. I am grateful for Marshall's administration taking the chance on a young assistant coach nine years ago. What a journey it has been. I have appreciated all the support from the Marshall leadership over the years."

After Noah Mullens won his second West Virginia Amateur golf championship, he drove straight from The Greenbrier to Guyan Golf and Country Club.Mullens, from Milton, grew up at Guyan and has played there all his life. Even home events from his college days at Marshall were played in his back yard.

Cabell Midland pitcher Drea Watts threw a perfect game in a 9-0 win over No. 8 Jefferson in the first game of the Class AAAA state tournament on Tuesday.Watts struck out 11 of 15 batters faced, and none of the balls hit into play moved past the infield.

SOUTH CHARLESTON — No. 3-seeded Herbert Hoover built momentum late and scored seven runs in the final two frames for an 8-0 run rule victory over No. 6 Pikeview on Tuesday in the Class AAA softball state tournament.The Huskies continue into the winner’s bracket on Wednesday while Pikeview faced Brooke in an elimination game on Tuesday night.

SOUTH CHARLESTON — University turned around 15 minutes after a bitter loss and won its way past Hurricane 1-0 in a Class AAAA tournament elimination game on Wednesday.The win kept the Hawks alive for the final game of Wednesday’s schedule ahead of championship Thursday against the winner of a follow-up game between Parkersburg South and Cabell Midland. Hurricane’s season came to a close.

It’s something that when you get into coaching and go through all of these years — these are the goals to work for,” Morgantown coach Lorri Lipscomb said. “This team has put everything together at the right moment. We’re firing on all cylinders. They’re making it happen.”

The event begins on Saturday and runs until June 13.Hosted in Huntington for the first time, the event has also expanded to 32 teams among the four classes. It’s a unique opportunity for revenue generation and tourism for the area as folks will follow schools from across the state to Huntington.
