After months of elaborate American military preparations, at 10:46 p.m. (EST) Friday, January 2, President Donald Trump issued an order from his Mar-a-Lago home in South Florida for the U.S. military to begin a lightning attack on Venezuela's most heavily defended military base. The goal of the mission was to arrest Venezuela's illegitimate president, Nicolas Maduro, and his politically influential wife, Cilia Flores, and bring them to the United States to face criminal charges of narco-terrorism in a federal court in New York City.

Two weeks ago, the resumption of joint American-Israeli air strikes against Iran appeared to be imminent until Trump stated on Monday, May 18, that the leaders of the Gulf states had asked him to postpone the attack on Iran that Trump said he had ordered for the next day. Trump said the Gulf state leaders had told him that those now running Iran, facing the threat of another devastating American-Israeli attack, had become “more reasonable” and appeared to be more willing to agree to America's demands concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of Iran's nuclear threat.

After a two-hour-long meeting in the White House Situation Room with top American foreign policy, military, and national security officials, last Friday, President Donald Trump rejected the latest Iranian proposal for a Memorandum of Understanding that would lead to 60 days of negotiations to end Iran's current conflict with the U.S. and Israel and to address Trump's demands that Iran end its nuclear weapons program.

After weeks of on-again, off-again negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, an agreement was announced Sunday on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that provides the framework of an agreement to end the conflict that began with a joint-U.S.-Israeli air strike on Iran on February 28, AND which decapitated the Islamic regime's leadership.

When American and Israeli warplanes struck across Iran on February 28, 2026, Trump administration officials privately predicted the fighting would be over within six weeks. Nearly six months later, that timeline now looks ridiculously unrealistic. A 60-day ceasefire with Iran that was to begin in mid-June with the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial shipping traffic was broken by Iran before the ink on the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) had enough time to fully dry, while the strait, the maritime chokepoint through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil and gas had been flowing, remained closed creating a global energy crisis.

Last week the Israeli air force bombed the semi-demolished Abu al-Duhur military airfield in northern Syria, cratering the runway and destroying adjacent warehouses in order to make the base unusable. The attack was triggered by an Israeli intelligence report warning that Turkey was about to install a radar-guided air defense unit on the base, located near the Syrian-Turkish border, to be manned by Turkish troops. This would pose a threat to the Israeli warplanes which have been openly operating for the past 18 months in Syrian airspace.

Last week, President Trump announced that he has reached a deal with Venezuela's interim government, giving the U.S. effective ownership of over 65 billion barrels of that country's proven oil reserves, effectively more than doubling America's domestic oil reserves, which had stood at about 46 billion barrels.
