This week's KCII Area Athletes of the Week are Highland girls and boys summer sports stars Katelyn Thomann and Owen Eden. Thomann made the biggest play for the Huskies to this point in the year when she delivered a game-winning hit to push Highland past No. 3 Louisa-Muscatine and into the top spot in the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division. She finished the week with four RBI, two hits and two runs scored. Eden swung a hot bat all week for the Huskies, finishing with 10RBI, nine total hits and five runs scored. He had a pair of 3RBI games against Louisa-Muscatine and Pekin. Congratulations Katelyn and Owen!

The HLV Warriors traveled to Schaefer Field and scored a win over the Sigourney softball Savages 16-3. The visitors posted five in the first and would lead throughout. Sigourney got within 5-3 with two in the first and one in the second. That was as close as the Savages would get after HLV put together a monster 11 run third to halt the contest after four frames. HLV out hit Sigourney 11-7. Serenity McClenethan led the Warriorettes at the plate with three RBI, a hit and a run. Bryndal Jack was the winning pitcher with four innings, six hits, three unearned runs and a strikeout. Karling Taylor had an RBI for Sigourney with a hit. It was a two hit day each for Kia Montgomery and Abyl McCulley, Montgomery scored twice. Emerie McCulley took the loss with seven hits, five earned runs and a strikeout. HLV is 11-10 and Sigourney 8-14.

It was a Senior Night success for the Keota Eagle softball team this week in a twin-bill takedown of Iowa Valley, 6-4 and 9-2.

It was a sweep and a celebration for the Highland Huskies at home this week against Wapello.

Golden Hawk baseball met the RVC champion Regals and earned a split, taking game one 7-6 before dropping the second 6-1.

Life on the road in the Southeast Iowa Superconference is never easy, the latest example was the road trip this week for the Highland Huskies, who were swept in both baseball and softball by the Pekin Panthers.

On the baseball diamond it was a 10-2 Regina win. The Regals built a 7-0 lead with three in the first and four in the third.

The playoff opener for the Hillcrest Academy Raven softball team packed plenty of drama, as the Ravens advanced through HLV with a 7-6 win on the road.

The No. 8 in Class 1A Sigourney Savage baseball team left no doubt in Tuesday's Class 1A District 11 Semifinal, knocking out the visiting Van Buren Warriors 16-0 in four innings. The Savages scored in every inning, two in the first, three in the second and a monster 11 run third inning put things out of reach. Sigourney pounded out 16 hits in the win, nine different players in the Sigourney lineup scored a run, six of the nine had an RBI and six of the nine had a hit. The Savages smacked three homers in the contest, one each for Lincoln Power, Hunter Sellers and Graham Moore. Power finished with five RBI on a pair of hits with a run, Moore drove in three on three hits with two runs, Sellers knocked in two on two hits with three runs. Ryker Van Den Huevel had three hits with an RBI, Carson O'Rourke a pair of hits with an RBI and a run. Ike Molyneux knocked in one. Jayden Jensen scored three runs and Landon Conrad two. Chase Clarahan had two hits and was the winning pitcher, throwing all four with just one hit and eight Ks. Van Buren ends the year at 9-16, Sigourney advances to 21-3.

Funeral services for 89-year-old Arbadella Ann “Arbie” Reed of Washington will be at 10a.m. Saturday, July 18th at the Assembly of God Church in Washington. Interment will follow at the Keota Cemetery. Calling hours begin at 3p.m. Friday, July 17th at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with family present to receive friends from 5-7p.m. Memorials have been established for Halcyon House for the purchase of small kitchen appliances.
