Just five of the 19 Sitka black-tailed deer brought from Kodiak to the southern peninsula are known to have survived. The state intends to try again.

Last fall, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game brought 19 Sitka black-tailed deer from an island near Kodiak to the bottom of the Kenai Peninsula as part of an effort to see how the animals would fare.

Not well, it turned out. At least 13 of the deer died. Another one slipped out of its GPS collar, and the department isn't sure if it survived.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy said July 30 that the state is setting up a new office to handle coordination on military matters among various stakeholders.

The railroad said Monday that the Federal Railroad Administration is awarding the money for rehabilitation work slated for the Hurricane Gulch Bridge midway between Talkeetna and Cantwell. The federal money will combine with $7.2 million in matching funds from the railroad, bringing a total of $36 million to the project, according to a prepared statement from the Alaska Railroad, a state-owned corporation.

The Anchorage Community Development Authority has sued two entities over their partial ownership of the downtown former Nordstrom property, which municipal officials plan to redevelop.

Anchorage officials began demolishing the Big Timber Motel on Aug. 11.
