Sometimes, if you're lucky, the magic of a home is already there, just waiting to be uncovered. Such was the case with this Healdsburg, California, property, which designer Lauren Nelson and architect Monica Ream reimagined as a cozy, kid-friendly summer retreat primed for family memory-making. Arriving to Stinson Beach after the short but windy drive from San Francisco is a feeling akin to taking a deep breath. Interior designer Chloe Redmond Warner knows the feeling well. After renting a house there during the pandemic, she quickly fell in love with the close-knit community and has since designed interiors for several homes in the area, including this new vacation home by architect Eric Davies.

When architect Les Eerkes first visited the wooded site of his clients’ future waterside retreat, “It was immediately clear that the architecture had to embrace the richness of the setting,” he recalls. The owners, avid naturalists, wanted a contemporary, glass-walled structure that offered easy interaction with sea and forest, be it an invigorating swim or foraging for mushrooms. The result, Eerkes notes, is a “house dedicated to the enjoyment of the landscape.” In addition to outdoor lounge areas overlooking the water, there is an alfresco kitchen that accommodates the homeowners’ frequent hosting of family and friends. “I really like to grill, and there’s also a high BTU burner for crab and shrimp boils,” says one of the owners, noting the bounty of seafood right off their beach, including oysters and clams. “There’s a real hunter-gatherer ethos here,” says Eerkes. “This residence is deeply rooted in its place.”

From overhead, the beauty of the home’s Pope Valley location is on full display. The siding is ReSawn Timber Co.’s Iruka, a charred cypress. Windows and doors by Optimum Window embrace the view.

For this 1940s home on a terraced hillside in Kentfield, the goal wasn’t an aggressive modernization. Instead, the owners wanted to honor the traditional architecture while updating finishes and bringing in furnishings that spoke to their wish to share the house frequently with family and friends. “Hospitality is central to their lifestyle,” says interior designer Guillaume Coutheillas. To instill the rooms with soulfulness, he looked to the beauty of nature—both the home’s setting, which offers unobstructed views of Mount Tamalpais, as well as his own childhood memories of the landscapes of France.
