The Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach is trying something a little different this fall. On Thursday, September 3, the museum will host its first Books, Borscht & Blues event, bringing together food, live music and the museum’s Village Books & Gifts store. Jo-Anne Friesen, manager of MHV Village Books & Gifts, says the idea came out of conversations with one of the musicians involved. “We're so excited. We're trying something new at the museum. We're doing books, borscht and blues.” The evening will take place in the Peter Barkman Pavilion, with the borscht buffet beginning at 6 p.m. and the Blues Cafe starting at 7:30. Owens now lives in Calgary, but Friesen says her music is being played internationally. If you could make one seasonal decision for southeastern Manitoba, what would it be? Keep summer weather around until Thanksgiving, or bring on fall right now? That was the question Country 107 put to its listeners, and judging by the responses, there is no shortage of strong opinions about sunshine, sweaters, hot chocolate, bonfires, bugs and everything in between. The question was part of a Country 107 contest sponsored by Wendy’s in Steinbach, with listeners entering for a chance to win a $25 Wendy’s gift card. And while the contest is now closed, the seasonal debate was clearly just getting started. The case for keeping summer For some listeners, summer isn't simply about warm temperatures. She also wouldn't mind getting some extra time out of the garden with a longer growing season. We need MORE summer... love the heat...” Curtis is also firmly in the summer camp, especially when it comes to family. “Love the summer. I'm a big sports guy and love watching my kids play the sports.” For Mellisa, warmer weather means more opportunities to get outside with her son. “I love running with my 13-year-old son outside and we have a marathon coming up and would love to enjoy it with some nice weather.” Shannen, meanwhile, may have found the perfect compromise. “I love the cooler mornings but still nice during the day.” Related Stories: Pioneer life or tomorrow? And love the colour of the trees.” Amber also likes fall because of its moderate temperatures. “Fall is the perfect weather. Not too hot and not too cold. It's just right.” For Allison, the appeal is partly about what to wear. “I love cool weather and wearing sweaters!” Pam took that argument a step further. “It's my favourite season and it's waaaaay too short!! There is something so comforting about the Fall. Desmond is looking at the calendar for an entirely different reason. “Fall cause that means hunting season has started.” Rena has a reason that might resonate with anyone who has spent the summer swatting and scratching. “Fall all the way, all the yucky bugs are gone to sleep.” Then there's Kim, who appears to have discovered one of the hidden advantages of cooler weather. “No one questions me when I'm drinking hot chocolate.” And Nick isn't particularly interested in extending the heat. “I don't like hot days. Anywhere between plus 10 and -25 is my kind of weather.” So, summer or fall? Ultimately, the perfect Manitoba forecast might be a little bit of both: warm enough for the deck, cool enough for a sweater, colourful trees, no mosquitoes and absolutely no snow. For Wendy Bloomfield, a 43-year career in public service began with a question from her young daughter. “Where do I go today?” It was 1983, and Bloomfield’s daughter had started kindergarten under a new schedule in the Seine River School Division. Instead of attending school every morning, kindergarten was being offered for a full day every other day. For Bloomfield’s family, the arrangement was difficult. She was working part time, her daughter’s father had days off during the week, and the family also relied on a part-time babysitter. Soon, people began encouraging her to run for school trustee. She did. Forty-three years later, as she prepares to leave the Seine River School Board, the reason she first stepped forward remains closely connected to the work she has continued to do ever since: making life better for children. There was a lot to learn, from understanding reports and preparing for meetings to knowing where to find the information needed to make decisions. But she also learned that being a trustee was not simply about bringing forward an idea and expecting it to become reality. As she explained in a 2022 interview, a trustee has only one vote. Success comes from being able to influence the people around the board table and build support for an idea. Bloomfield’s passion for the kindergarten issue helped her successfully bring forward a motion that resulted in the schedule being reversed the following year. For Bloomfield, the experience was an early lesson in how complicated education decisions can be. It also demonstrated that advocacy can make a difference. That growth brought new students, new ideas and new opportunities to learn from one another. It also brought challenges. “There's lots of challenges with growth,” Bloomfield says, pointing to overcrowding, a shortage of space, the need for portables and the need for new schools. Still, she says growth has been rewarding to witness. The division also went through a major transition in the early 1990s when its French-language schools became part of the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine. The division even voted to transfer some of its surplus to the new French-language division. “There were some struggles, but at the end of the day, it was a very amicable breakup,” she says. Staying through the difficult years Not every chapter of Bloomfield’s time on the board has been easy. In recent years, the division went through significant financial challenges, including a period when it was facing a projected deficit of more than $5 million. Her final year away from the chair’s position has also given her a chance to step back and see the board from a different perspective. She says she did not fully appreciate how much more involved the chair was in the day-to-day work until she was no longer in that position. Around 2014, Bloomfield put her name forward through the Manitoba School Boards Association to serve on committees. She was selected to sit on the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba. She served two two-year terms as a Manitoba school board representative. But she wasn't ready to leave. “I really liked the work that they were doing and chose to stay on as a community volunteer,” she says. Today, Bloomfield is chair of the Child Nutrition Council. Staff provide webinars and in-person workshops for people running school programs, including information about nutrition and ways to stretch food budgets. For Bloomfield, it is another way to support children. And it is another example of how the work that began with concern for her own daughter grew into a much broader commitment. When she looks back, she says what kept her going was seeing the division move forward and knowing she could still contribute. In the early years, Bloomfield says there were difficulties within Seine River and a need to refocus on what mattered most. “The students.” Every election, she would ask herself whether she wanted to continue. As long as she felt things were improving for children, the answer was yes. “I still think I could contribute,” she says. “But I'm tired. I'm tired.” There is no bitterness in that decision. Instead, there is a sense of satisfaction that she has reached a point where she can hand responsibility to others. But her legacy is not simply measured in the number of terms she served or the years she spent around the board table. It can be traced back to a mother listening to her daughter, recognizing that something wasn't working and deciding to do something about it. That decision led to 43 years of asking questions, learning, advocating and making difficult decisions. And while her time as a school trustee is coming to an end, Bloomfield’s work for children is not. For Bloomfield, that has always been the reason to keep showing up. And now, as she prepares to step away from the board, she can do so knowing that the concern of one mother in 1983 became a lifetime of service to generations of children.

Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre is inviting the community behind the scenes next month, offering a look at how injured and orphaned wildlife is treated, rehabilitated, and prepared to return to the wild. The centre's annual open house takes place Sept. 26 and 27, with visitors able to explore parts of the Wildlife Haven campus that are normally off-limits to the public. Zoe Nakata with Wildlife Haven says that includes the examination and surgery areas, the X-ray machine, and outdoor flight enclosures where bald eagles practice flying before release.

For nearly three decades, the Steinbach and Area Garden Club has been putting down roots in the community. The club has become a familiar presence at Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV), where volunteers help care for the museum’s gardens and contribute to its educational and historical programming. The garden also produces a variety of vegetables, including corn, carrots, kohlrabi, ground cherries and garlic. Much of the produce is used by the museum’s restaurant, The Livery Barn, while some of what remains is given to Soups On. After initially growing the tree in a pot for three years, she eventually planted it in the museum's orchard. Planting for the future The club’s work at the museum has also included projects focused on sustainability and long-term growth. The club's commitment to sustainability was also reflected in its 25th anniversary project. Members planted 25 trees near the pond, creating the Fred Kaita Grove in honour of the club's founder. Falk Nurseries helped with the project, including donating an additional eight trees, while volunteers planted them. Room to grow While some club members have been involved for years, Vande Vyvere says there is always room for more volunteers. For the club, that shared responsibility is part of what makes the work rewarding. The gardens provide a place to grow plants, preserve history and share knowledge — but more importantly, they provide another place for people in the community to put down roots.

There will be free entry to all provincial parks in Manitoba this Labour Day weekend. The Manitoba government announced today that provincial park vehicle permits will not be required from Friday to Monday. Nightly camping fees still apply. Entrance fees to national parks remain in effect.

The number of Canadians hospitalized from an e-scooter fall is rising. However, the opposite trend is being noticed in Manitoba. Diana Craiovan is Program Lead for Hospital Data Advancement and Engagement with Canadian Institute for Health Information. She says an increase in e-scooter popularity across Canada is contributing to more hospital visits. In 2025/26, there were 837 hospitalizations in Canada caused by e-scooter injuries. That is up from 601 in 2024/25. However, in Manitoba, there were 10 hospitalizations in 2025/26, compared to 17 one year earlier. Most densely populated regions seeing highest number of injuries Nearly 93 per cent of e-scooter injury hospitalizations in Canada come from four different provinces. Last year, Ontario led the way with 294, an increase of 43 per cent from the previous year. That was followed by B.C. with 172, which is more than 100 per cent higher than in 2024/25. Next is Alberta with 163, which is an increase of 13 per cent. A new night market is bringing a different kind of shopping experience to the southeast this fall. Trying something new Tabitha Goodman, member of Gather MB, says the event is designed as an alternative-style market, with all ages welcome but vendors and activities geared primarily toward adults. “Just trying something new for the Steinbach area,” Goodman says. The evening will feature live music, flash tattoos, manicures, a thrift boutique and a variety of vendors. According to Manitoba Hydro, a pole fire and downed lines have resulted in a power outage in Steinbach Monday evening. The outage is affecting 1,467 customers north and east of Main Street. In a post on social media, a spokesperson for Manitoba Hydro said they are working to fix the issue as quickly as possible. Power is expected to be restored before 8 p.m.
