Hanover School Division (HSD) superintendent and CEO Joe Thiessen will resign from the role at the end of 2026 after more than three decades in education. Leaving a lasting impact “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve HSD as a teacher, principal, and superintendent and CEO,” Thiessen says. Thiessen joined the division in 1995 as a teacher and worked with students at Niverville Collegiate Institute, Blumenort School and Woodlawn School across the early, middle and senior years programs. In 2004, he became principal of Mitchell Elementary School, a role he held for 20 years before moving into the division’s top leadership position as superintendent and CEO. A teenage driver was killed Tuesday afternoon in a crash along the Trans Canada Highway, on the Ontario side of the border. At approximately 1:45 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with Emergency Medical Services responded to reports of a collision on Highway 17, west of Kenora, near Rush Bay. The crash involved a tractor trailer and passenger vehicle. According to OPP, a 17-year-old male driver from Winnipeg was pronounced dead on scene. He was the lone occupant of the passenger vehicle. A section of the highway, extending into Manitoba, was closed for several hours while the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team conducted its investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the crash is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Drivers in Steinbach can expect intermittent road closures and traffic pattern changes over the coming weeks as the City completes asphalt overlay work in the Stone Bridge Crossing area. According to the City of Steinbach, construction is underway on Stone Bridge Crossing from Provincial Trunk Highway 12 North to Albert Street, as well as Maplewood Street from Loewen Boulevard to Stone Bridge Crossing, Cypress Place, Meadowood Place and surrounding neighbourhood streets. The Steinbach Arts Council has successfully held one of its most important events of the year while managing a surge in community interest that continues to stretch its capacity. Executive director David Klassen says the organization’s recent gala served as both a key fundraiser and an opportunity to share its story with supporters across the region. “It’s always great to have an audience in the room and you can spread the message to 200 people at once,” Klassen says. Registrations more than double That message centres on growth. Funding model relies on community support Like many non-profit organizations, the Steinbach Arts Council cannot rely on program fees alone to cover its operating costs. To bridge the gap, the organization depends on a mix of sponsorships, donations, grants and fundraising events. Klassen estimates that about 40 percent of the cost of programming is subsidized through those efforts. “You could blanket statement say approximately 40 percent of the cost of every single thing that we do is covered with our fundraising,” he says. Klassen says capacity limitations are becoming increasingly noticeable across programs, performances and exhibitions. “People are coming, people are asking, and people are also noticing that more and more often they’re being put on a wait list or the event is sold out,” he says. The organization is now exploring how to expand or adapt its facilities while maintaining the quality of its existing programming. Focus on community impact Looking ahead, the Steinbach Arts Council is prioritizing steady, sustainable growth. As warmer weather brings more students outdoors, Hanover School Division is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert around schools, crosswalks and drop-off areas. Superintendent Joe Thiessen says the change in season means more students are walking, biking and spending time outdoors, creating increased pedestrian activity near schools. “We’ve got excited kids potentially running onto roadways, drop-off points or bus loops without looking,” Thiessen says. “We’re just saying, let’s keep our eyes open.” He says children eager to get outside may not always be aware of their surroundings. “With regards to bikers and walkers, that’s great — we want to encourage that,” Thiessen says. The MLA for Steinbach is calling the spring sitting of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly a missed opportunity. MLAs wrapped up the spring sitting on Monday, and Kelvin Goertzen says the NDP Government chose to ignore the pleas of Manitobans. The Progressive Conservatives proposed raising Manitoba's basic personal income tax exemption to $30,000, which Goertzen says would have provided families with an additional approximately $3,000 each year. Instead, Premier Wab Kinew and his government opted to stick with their plan to remove the Provincial Sales Tax from groceries starting July 1st.
