Fraco-Manitoban group Bandaline kicked off the live entertainment as a folk soundtrack to the Chamber of Commerce community supper. Attendees enjoyed a hearty buffet-style meal while chatting with family, friends, and neighbours. The highlight of the evening was the first ever Frog Follies Kids Fair, where young entrepreneurs put their homemade goods on display for attendees to purchase. From sweet treats to 3D printed mushroom magnets, local children showcased their creative talents. Later, Ukrainian psych-folk band ZRADA took over the main stage, followed by Les Barn Boys. The Richer Roughstock Rodeo roared to life Friday night as bull riders took to the arena for Bullnanza, kicking off a weekend that brings thousands of people to the southeast Manitoba community. The stands and grounds were packed as fans gathered for the opening-night action, with the energy continuing into a giant rodeo social later in the evening. In addition, attendees could enjoy food trucks, a market, beer gardens and a mechanical bull that kept the action going into the night. The Richer Roughstock Rodeo began in 2013 and has grown substantially since its first year. Rodeo president and founding member Pat Stolwyk said the event now draws more than 14,000 people over the weekend. What started as a small mixed farm in 1926 has now become a modern dairy operation, where three generations have helped build a family farming legacy For the Wiens family, 100 years of farming is about much more than cows, crops and machinery. It is about family, hard work, changing times and the many people who helped keep the farm going. David Wiens and his brother Charles are now the third generation of the family to farm the property, which was settled by their grandparents in 1926. The family recently celebrated that century-long milestone at Skyline Dairy, located north-west of Grunthal, where about 250 friends, neighbours, family members and community supporters gathered together to mark the occasion. Their early years included the difficult Depression era of the 1930s. The farm was originally a mixed operation, with a little bit of everything. “They had some cows, they had some chickens, you know, ducks, geese, pigs, whatever, and they were serving the local markets,” Wiens explained. Over time, the farm gradually became more focused on dairy. Today, Skyline Dairy milks about 240 cows in an automated barn built in 2008. The family also farms about 1,600 acres of cultivated land, growing much of the feed needed for the cows while also producing some cash crops. The farm has grown considerably from the 160 acres owned by Wiens’ grandparents. One major turning point came in the late 1960s with the introduction of supply management. Wiens remembers his father saying that farming became much more stable at that point, allowing the family to build on what they already had. Technology has also completely changed the way the farm operates. The automated milking barn has freed up time, while modern cropping equipment allows the family to farm with much greater precision. And today, the Wiens family relies heavily on a team of employees and a farm manager to keep the operation running at a high level. He credits his grandparents and parents, as well as his siblings, employees, neighbours and others who have contributed over the years. “It was about bringing people together,” Wiens said. Wiens and his brother Charles got the old tractor running again, giving visitors a chance to see a piece of the farm’s early history. Wiens remembers hearing stories from his father about how he and his brother would argue over who got to use the tractor. “The other one got to use horses,” Wiens said with a laugh. The family also still has other reminders of the past, including an old cream separator once used by Wiens’ mother. Other pieces of equipment have found new homes in local museums. Later, a banquet was held under a tent in the farmyard, where MLA for La Verendrye, Konrad Narth, made a presentation recognizing the family’s milestone. For Wiens, seeing all the people who had come out to their celebration was one of the most meaningful parts of the day. “It was almost overwhelming. We had so many people, but it was heartwarming to know that so many people cared about what had been accomplished here.” The day also allowed friends, family and neighbours to catch up, share memories and talk about what comes next. The next 100 years? The future of Skyline Dairy is not completely mapped out. Wiens has two children and his brother Charles has two children, but none are currently directly involved in the farm. They still enjoy coming back to visit, however, and the family is working with its current team to find a way to keep the farm operating as a unit. For Wiens, that is part of what makes the centennial so meaningful. It is not simply about looking back. But for anyone thinking about making farming a career, he says the rewards can run much deeper than a paycheque. “Farming obviously is hard work, and you have the ups and downs, but I think if you really want to do it, if it’s your passion, I don’t think you can go wrong,” he said. For Wiens, one of the greatest rewards has been the opportunity to raise a family on the farm and pass along the values he learned growing up. The farm may have changed dramatically since 1926. The machinery is newer, the cows are milked with automated technology, and the operation is much larger. But the heart of the farm remains much the same: family, community, hard work and a willingness to keep moving forward. After nearly two decades on Steinbach City Council, Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says one of the most difficult decisions of his public life has been to step away from municipal politics. Zwaagstra confirms he will not seek re-election in October as he prepares to campaign as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the Steinbach constituency whenever Manitoba's next provincial election is called. While he hopes to continue serving the community as an MLA, he admits leaving city council won't be easy.

Cornelius Klassen passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, leaving behind a rich legacy of love, family, and companionship. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Cynthia (Brian) Klassen, Jacqueline Harms (Roland Kroecher), Jeffrey Klassen (Lisa Harcus), Terrence (Michelle) Klassen, and Lesley Klassen. He was a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Taryn, Jenievah, Jasmin, Amy, Justin, Michael, Anna, Riley, and Brooke and was blessed with nine great-grandchildren. Cornelius found deep happiness later in life with his fiancée, Mabel Virginia Cooper, and embraced her family as his own. He will be dearly missed by Mabel and her children, Carla (Sonny) Demery, Sharon (Mervin) McKay, Len (Fran) Cooper, Lena (Frank) Klassen, Katherine Cooper, John (Elsie) Cooper, Charlie (Corrina) Cooper, and Belinda (Peter) Merasty, along with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cornelius was predeceased by his parents, Diedrich and Annie Klassen, his brother Bernie Klassen, his beloved granddaughter, Amber Klassen, and Elizabeth Fehr, mother to their children. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Altona Senior Centre. Interment will take place at the Altona Cemetery. Under the summer night sky, families came together at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach Friday evening for a movie. The City of Steinbach hosted a free showing of Zootopia 2, with the movie getting underway at 9 p.m. People arrived early to find a spot on the hill. Some brought lawn chairs, while others spread blankets across the grass and settled in for the evening. As the sun went down, the hill filled with families watching the movie together. The event gave families a chance to enjoy a free movie outdoors while making the most of a summer evening in Steinbach. -With files from Corny Rempel.

St. Pierre-Jolys was hopping with activity this weekend as Frog Follies brought the community together for music, food, sports, family activities and the Canadian National Frog Jumping Championships. The festival began Friday evening at Parc Carillon with a Chamber of Commerce community supper, live music and the first Frog Follies Kids Market, before continuing Saturday with the 130th year of the St. Pierre-Jolys Agricultural, Horticultural, and Homecrafts Fair and Exhibition. Roxane Gagné, Frog Follies program director and a local Grade 8 teacher, said organizers expected a busy festival but were still impressed by the turnout.

What started as an idea in a small Richer newspaper has grown into one of southeast Manitoba's biggest summer gatherings. The Richer Roughstock Rodeo is celebrating another weekend of rodeo action, drawing thousands of people to the community and bringing together rodeo fans, families, volunteers, sponsors and competitors from near and far. For Pat Stolwyk, president and one of the founders of the event, the growth has gone far beyond what he imagined when the rodeo began in 2013.

The Carillon Sultans keep rolling right along, as the group improved their record to 4-1 on Saturday, assuring them a spot in the finals on Sunday. Between Thursday and Friday, the Sultans finished 3-1 and rode that hot streak into a battle against Nova Scotia 2. Brady Papineau produced the opening run for Carillon, as he grounded out, but a run scored on the play. In the bottom of the second, the Sultans' offense exploded for seven runs, thanks to RBI singles by Cody Wielgosh, Papineau, Ryan Powers, and Dayton Christensen. Nova Scotia 2 managed to battle back and make a game of it, but they could never get back to even ground, as the Sultans managed to hold off any comeback. Cedric Lagasse earned the win for the Sultans, allowing 8 hits and 8 runs (7earned) over 5 2/3rd's innings.
