A consensus statement on higher education’s role in “Building Sustainable Futures”, has been approved by the some 65 participants in the Global Higher Education Symposium 2026 (GHES) held on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum 2026 on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

However, discussions regarding their political influence frequently rely on limited indicators, such as the number of parliamentary questions, media visibility of rectors or frequency of public statements.

The world is in the midst of profound change. Communities are experiencing the impact of predicted and persistent problems, including climate change and natural disasters, as well as war and other geopolitical tensions, all of which exacerbate persistent global inequalities in wealth, gender and cultural background.

Every year, thousands of graduate students embark on a PhD hoping to become researchers. For many, an academic career is not just one possible outcome among many; it is the primary reason they chose doctoral education in the first place. Although aspirations naturally evolve, global surveys consistently show that a large proportion of doctoral students initially intend to remain in academia, even though only a minority will eventually secure a permanent academic position.
