(7News) — As 7News celebrates Black History Month, Anchor Adrianna Hopkins is shedding light on an issue that impacts thousands of people: a lack of diversity in clinical trials for medicines and treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Scientists are excited about treatments on the horizon to slow the progression of Alzheimer's, but they're not sure exactly how Black people will respond to them. According to the Washington Post , in one clinical trial, Black patients globally only accounted for 47 out of nearly 1800 participants. Taylor said the Alzheimer's Association is working to spread the word about minority participation in these clinical trials because what works in trials for one group may not work for another. “We want to make sure that the medications are safe, as well as effective for the African American community," she said. "And that cannot take place until we are included a part of that clinical trial with that new medication.” She said there's a study called the New IDEAS Study for dementia that's seeking 2,000 African American and 2,000 Latino participants.
