Between falling share prices, a major antitrust ruling and an onslaught of quarterly results, readers had a lot to digest before answering our August survey last week. It seems they didn’t like what they saw: Sentiment about the technology sector was the most pessimistic in our surveys since March 2023, when the government closed Silicon Valley Bank.

Palo Alto Networks on Monday said revenue rose 12% to $2.2 billion in the July quarter, or 1 percentage point higher than the cybersecurity software seller had projected three months ago. The company said revenue growth would be similar in the October fiscal quarter, and that its free cash flow margin for the July quarter rose 2 percentage points compared to the same period a year ago.Palo

What a difference a month makes. Respondents to our September survey were markedly more optimistic than in August about 13 of the 14 big tech companies we regularly ask them about. The exception was Coinbase, where reader sentiment was essentially unchanged.
