Hundreds of local residents and visitors alike gathered at Scarborough State Beach last week to ring in the New Year by participating in the 49th annual Penguin Plunge. The event raised money for Special Olympics Rhode Island, which successfully achieved its goal of raising $180,000.

The parish hall of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence, was packed with participants on December 7. More than 200 attended, twice as many as last year. The conference also featured dozens of local ministries and vendors selling books, rosaries and prayer cards.

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island was recently gifted a 67-acre piece of land in South Kingstown that it says will be used to provide a natural habitat to support and protect plants and local wildlife.
