DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa House bill that would criminalize 'smuggling' undocumented immigrants is back at the Statehouse.

In a 3-0 vote, Iowa senators advanced a hands-free driving bill through subcommittee today. Senate File 22 would make it illegal to touch or hold electronic devices while driving.

Some Iowans are raising concern about new proposed state science standards. In the proposal, any mention of "climate change" was changed to the phrase "climate trends," and all references to human impact on climate change were removed. Although the standards would still include the concept of biological change over time, the word "evolution" was erased.

A bill to establish a five-year moratorium on new casino licenses advanced through an Iowa House subcommittee and the Iowa House Ways and Means Committee on Monday.

In a 2-1 vote Monday, Iowa House lawmakers advanced a bill that would make wide-ranging changes to the state's homeschooling programs. Parents, students, religious groups and education experts packed a Statehouse meeting room for the subcommittee hearing on House File 88. Some argued it would empower homeschool families and protect parental freedom. Others called the bill a step backward for Iowa education. If passed, House File 88 would remove requirements for parents to provide their child's vaccination records or blood tests for lead exposure to their local school district before starting a homeschool program. It also would get rid of requirements to teach science and social studies to elementary school students in some homeschool programs, and it would double the tax credit for tuition and textbooks. The bill would also establish that the state, accredited private schools, and Iowa's community colleges and public universities can't discriminate based on a homeschool student's diploma. The bill would also prevent world language teachers from using gender-neutral language when teaching languages that have a grammatical gender system. The lawmaker who introduced a bill to ban diversity, equity, and inclusion offices at Iowa's community colleges pulled the plug on the proposal Wednesday. During the bill's subcommittee hearing, Rep. Taylor Collins, R-Mediapolis, said community colleges have already taken steps to remove DEI programs.
