(WHP) - Heart attacks—unfortunately they can happen to anyone at anytime, but they are most common during the month of January due to various factors from cold weather to the use of alcohol and drugs. “Heart disease as you know is the leading cause of death across the world and this time of the year is particularly concerning because of the cold weather, so usually cold weather causes narrowing of the heart arteries. There's also increased alcohol use and sometimes even substance abuse which is why we see a higher incidents of heart attacks” says Dr. Mehreen Quershi, MD, a UPMC Cardiologist. The period of time between Christmas day and New Year's Day is one of the record alcohol and drug periods of the year in the United States. Dr. Qureshi says even “healthy”, or young people and teenagers could go into cardiac arrest as a result of overconsumption—and it could happen at any time. She says everyone should be aware of the warning signs and how to conduct CPR on a patient who is unconscious. Some of the most common warning signs being chest tightness, palpitations, pain down the left arm, or shortness of breath. There are various local groups that provide CPR and AED training including the Peyton walker foundation and the American red cross. Take care of yourself and others by limiting your alcohol use and being aware of the warning signs of a heart attack.">

Over 60 million women in the United States are living with some sort of heart disease. Wear red day aims to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease in women, and across the nation today people are wearing red to show their support. “February being heart month, we must all make a really concerned effort to change our lifestyles—again it's not easy but it's necessary if we want to avoid early deaths because they really do impact families in a very negative fashion” says Dr. Mehreen Qureshi, a UPMC Cardiologist. Dr. Qureshi says heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States and it can affect anyone at any age. However, raising awareness and learning the risk factors is the goal of American heart month. Some changes women and men can make to live a healthy lifestyle is eating a balanced diet, eating less saturated fat and sugar, getting an appropriate amount of exercise, limiting alcohol consumption, and controlling your stress and anxiety in a healthy manner.">
