When not serving as the honorary mayor of Tulip Time or the voice of Pella football as he has for more than two decades, a Pella resident enjoys his fair share of golf.

The Pella softball team bounced back from a tough end to the Tulip City Showdown on Monday with a 12-7 victory over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Tuesday while celebrating the program’s three seniors.

A rare June off-day from competition turned into celebration for the Pella softball team on Wednesday. The defending Class 4A state champions were recognized by the Iowa Cubs, and the team spent their day at Principal Park with a variety of activities. Pella’s three seniors, Katie Scheckel, Abby Melvin, and Lennon Eekhoff, got to throw the first pitch and the team participated in pregame activities and others during the game. The Dutch won an improbable state championship in 2025, coming into the Class 4A bracket last July as an unranked team, upsetting the top three pitchers based on ERA in the state on their way to the school’s first-ever summer sports title. The 2026 Dutch are 14-13 and will learn their postseason bracket today.

Today marks the Little Hawkeye Conference finales for both Pella summer teams. The Dutch baseball boys will host Oskaloosa as part of a weather-related site swap, with live coverage starting at 6:30 this evening on 92.1 KRLS. The Pella softball girls are traveling to Oskaloosa, with varsity scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Marion County chapter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is changing hands. Chapter founder and volunteer Main Coordinator Amy Uthus is stepping down effective July 1. Families First of Pella will become the new stewards of this early childhood literacy program.
