Jana Kennamer has retired after 36 years in education, much of it dedicated to teaching children how to read. But she has plans to continue helping kids read in retirement.

After twenty years of local builders being mandated to stay above the 2006 building code, Building Official Eric Self alongside the City Council have conducted a first reading of an order to amend the current building code ordinance to the state’s level. This is currently the 2021 code.

Lulu is a beautiful Walker coonhound; approximately 1 year old, and about 42 pounds. She is a friendly girl with puppy energy and lots of love to give. She would make a wonderful companion for an active family. Lulu’s sunny disposition will brighten any day, and she loves nothing more than being by your side. She enjoys walks and is working hard on her leash manners.

A factor not emphasized in the highs and lows of boat races was the safety of the workers, racers and spectators during those pop-up lightning storms that plagued race days for several years.

What do you think has stayed the same about you throughout your life? What has changed the most?

The Whole Backstage Community Theatre and the family of season sponsor, Sonny Lewis, will present the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Broadway musical Oklahoma! with final performances: June 25-28, 2026. Directed by Johnny Brewer in the traditional style of the 1955 treasured film, this family-friendly stage version describes the vision and heart of America’s settlers in 1907 with laughter, lovable characters, spectacular dancing, authentic costumes, full orchestra, and iconic songs.

Kay McElrath Johnson founded Marshall County Animal Advocates in 2020 because she recognized the major gap in our community’s efforts to address the overwhelming number of homeless dog and cats throughout Marshall County. A lifelong volunteer, to whom she credits her mother, Kay believes in doing work that doesn’t personally benefit the person doing it. She advocates volunteering, be it through nature or nurture and feels that the values instilled in her by her mother played a major role in shaping her belief that volunteering truly matters. Johnson watched her mother selflessly volunteer for the American Red Cross by teaching both First Aid and CPR classes, as well as establishing first aid stations throughout the county schools when they did not yet employ nurses.

The Marshall County ARC has a real heart for volunteer work, both from the community and even from their own members.

The Guntersville Museum docents help staff the museum on the weekends and educate its visitors.
