HOLTVILLE – City of Holtville officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning to celebrate the opening of the city’s decades-long Wetlands project, conceived by Elwood “Pete” Mellinger.
For some time now, I have been following the Spanish neurosurgeon turned author and lecturer, Mario Alonso Puig, who has presented in various places in Latin America and who has studied in the United States, where he also practiced his career, and who tells a very curious anecdote among his experiences. The Spaniard reveals that, on one occasion, a patient came to his office to ask him to increase the level of medication she was taking to combat stomach pain. The doctor says that when interviewing the patient, he asked her if she had any emotional problems to find the cause of the physical health problem. The patient revealed she had no major issues, except for her office supervisor. The specialist states the patient told him she could not stand her immediate boss, so the expert recommended smiling at her supervisor instead of increasing the dose. Stunned, the patient asked the doctor for a strategy to follow to reduce her pain. Somehow, the doctor convinced the patient who, weeks later, returns to the office not only to thank the doctor for the “prescription,” but to warn him that many of her colleagues at the office would have to come to the office to ask for help.
