Barbara Ball

Mary Cunningham Peay Evans, affectionately known as “M.C.”, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on December 2, 2024. Born in Winnsboro, South Carolina on March 6, 1937, she was the daughter of the late William Cunningham Peay and Mary (Mamie) Brown Peay. “M.C.” was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by Benjamin Edward (Ted) Evans, her husband of 59 years and 11 months; three children, Marcy Evans Wohlford (Mike), Molly Evans Tulowitzky (Jeff), and Jenny Evans Smith (Jim); and her grandchildren, Haley Morgan (Garrett), Mallory Wohlford (Austin), Reid Tulowitzky (Ashton), Graham Tulowitzky, and Merritt Tulowitzky; and one great-granddaughter, Lilah Morgan. She felt great joy and pride that her family remained very close, and she treasured their gatherings at her beloved Folly Beach house.

John Vinson Nicholson, Jr., was born on March 7, 1945, in Winnsboro, South Carolina, the son of J.V. Nicholson, Sr. and Mary Palmer Nicholson. He was predeceased by a sister, Rose Nicholson Smith. John attended school in Ridgeway until moving to Spartanburg at age 13. After graduating from Spartanburg High School in 1963, he attended Georgia Tech for one year before returning to Spartanburg where he graduated from Wofford College with a B.S. in Biology in 1967. At Wofford, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. John did post-graduate work at the University of South Carolina in the Department of Biology and subsequently attended the Medical University of South Carolina, graduating with a Doctorate in Dental Medicine in 1974.

WINNSBORO – Before Barbara Jackson hired on at the Winnsboro post office in December, 1989, she says she didn't even know where the post office was located. When she retired last month, she says it was like leaving family – not only those she worked with at the post office, but those she delivered the mail to as well.

WINNSBORO – For many children in developing countries, there would be no soccer ball, no stuffed animal, no Christmas joy, without Operation Christmas Child that provides Christmas shoebox gifts for these children in poor countries around the world.

BLYTHEWOOD – University of South Carolina senior defensive lineman Kyle Kennard, who is one of four finalists for the 2024 Lombardi Award, was on hand at Bethel-Hanberry Elementary's after school program to oversee the distribution of hundreds of turkey dinners with all the trimmings for the families of children who participate in the program.

WINNSBORO – During the Fairfield County Council meeting on Nov. 25, council members tabled, for the fourth time in as many months, a vote to appoint members to the county's A-Tax (Accommodation Tax) and H-Tax (Hospitality Tax) advisory committee. When seated, those members will make recommendations to council regarding the awarding of grants from the county's Local and State A-Tax revenue as well as from the county's H-Tax revenue.

BLYTHEWOOD – The Brothers of the Smoke Cigar Club in Blythewood turned their camaraderie into community care this Thanksgiving by presenting turkey baskets to families residing in The Pointe Apartments neighborhood.
